Identical quintuplets born in India
A 26-year-old software programmer in a southern Indian city has delivered identical quadruplets – an occurrence so rare that only one in 11 million mothers has them.
Shruthi Vivekanandan, based in Chennai (formerly Madras), delivered the naturally-conceived baby girls Aditi, Aakriti, Akshathi and Aapthi 10 weeks early, Press Trust of India said.
The births took place on April 25, but were reported only today.
The delivery was done without any complications and the babies weighed between 825 grams and 980 grams, said Dr. Meena Thiagarajan, a neonatal expert at Apollo Hospital.
Identical quadruplets occur once in 11-13 million births, according to different estimates.
Quadruplets are created when a fertilised egg that has split into two embryos goes into another phase of splitting.
