Small increase in numbers signing on
09/06/2006 - 11:44:47There was a small increase of 600 in the numbers signing on between April and May, according to figures released from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).
The seasonally-adjusted live register total increased from 158,200 in April to 158,800 in May. This compares with an increase of 1,200 in April.
In May, the estimated number of casual and part-time workers on the live register was 7,875 males and 12,583 females.
The live register is not designed to measure unemployment. It includes part-time workers (who work up to three days a week), seasonal and casual workers entitled to Unemployment Assistance or Benefit. Unemployment is measured by the Quarterly National Household Survey and the latest seasonally-adjusted figure, for December to February 2006, is 92,000 persons unemployed.
