Lenihan defends decision on children’s hospital

09/06/2006 - 13:51:44
Junior minister Brian Lenihan has defended the Government's decision to locate the proposed new national children's hospital alongside the Mater in Dublin.

The location was approved by the cabinet yesterday after being recommended by an independent task force.

However, Crumlin Children's Hospital and St James's Hospital have both described the decision as flawed, mainly due to what they regard as a lack of space on the Mater site.

Asked about the matter in Dublin today, Mr Lenihan said the location was chosen on the advice of experts without political interference.

"They came up with a recommendation that the site should be beside the Mater because that's what's in the best interests of all our children," he said.
