North: Parties in bid to end committee impasse

The North's political parties are expected to make another attempt today to agree on a chairperson for the Stormont committee set up to discuss a return to power-sharing.

The parties have failed to agree on a chair during talks in the past two days, mainly due to the stance of the Democratic Unionist Party.

A rotating chairmanship has been suggested, but the DUP has rejected the idea, saying it will not agree to any system that involves Sinn Féin.

The dispute bodes ill for the Irish and British governments' plan to get the parties to agree a return to power-sharing before November of this year.

Many commentators are asking whether an Executive can be formed when the DUP will not even agree to share power on a committee.
