IFA: Greencore should not get EU compensation
The IFA has dismissed a claim by Greencore that the company is entitled to €131m in EU compensation for the shut-down of the sugar beet industry in Ireland.
The Farmers Association has pointed out that Greencore properties no longer involved in sugar production are worth nearly €200m. The IFA wants beet growers to receive the bulk of the compensation.
Agriculture Minister Mary Coughlan said Greencore is discussing the matter with all stakeholders in the sector under a process laid down by the European Commission.
“Simultaneously I will have consultation and within a 45-day timeframe a proposal is going to be made available to me,” the minister said.
“We will analyse that in consultation with independent advice that was appointed by the government.
“If I decide to change the plan or alter it in one way or another, that then goes back to Greencore after which it will go to the European Commission."
