Around 1,000 homes flooded in Poland

06/06/2006 - 14:56:10
River levels in some regions of south-eastern Poland rose today after days of rain, flooding around 1,000 homes and making some roads impassable.

Firefighters were trying to secure the banks of the Wisloka River near Mielec, a town close to the Ukrainian border, after more than 100 homes were flooded, the PAP news agency reported, citing local official Zenon Kaminski.

Throughout the region, the overflowing of the Vistula River and several smaller rivers led to the flooding of about 1,000 houses and 25,000 acres of property, mostly farmland, PAP said.

The flooding swept away several small bridges and 340 people had been evacuated since Sunday.
