Reports this morning said research conducted for the Higher Education Authority found that 52% of Leaving Cert students in Cork achieved five or more honours grades in higher-level subjects in 2004.
The next highest figure is 46% in Dublin, followed by Limerick, Kilkenny, Clare, Wicklow, Waterford, Kildare, Galway and Tipperary, who are all above the national average of 40%.
At the other end of the table, just 29% of students in Louth secured five honours grades, while seven of the other counties in the bottom 10 are also in the border region.
