Body in cemetery 'not murder', say PSNI

Police tonight confirmed that they do not believe that the man was found dead today in a graveyard near north Belfast was murdered.

The body the man with a knife in his chest was discovered by a council worker at Carnmoney Cemetery in Newtownabbey.

One source said: “There was a knife sticking out of his chest.

“A bottle of water and pills were found beside him.”

The dead man’s identity has not yet been released, although he is believed to have been in his 50s.

Police spent the day examining the area where the body was found, near a shelter at the cemetery gates, at around 8am.

As inquiries continued, a post mortem was arranged for Wednesday.

But a Police Service of Northern Ireland spokeswoman said: “We are not treating the death as murder at this time.”
