ISME seeks crackdown on €12bn 'black economy'
06/06/2006 - 10:44:12The Irish Small and Medium Enterprises Association (ISME) is seeking a crackdown on firms operating in the so-called "black economy".
The association claimed today that unregistered businesses were severely under-cutting legitimate operators, especially in the childcare and building sectors.
ISME wants the Government to target these companies and to inform the public of the consequences of dealing with such firms.
It says recent figures show the black economy is worth around €12bn per year, with the Exchequer losing €2.7bn in unpaid taxes as a result.
