Explosion kills Hamas militant in northern Gaza

05/06/2006 - 10:03:15
A large explosion ripped through a house in a northern Gaza town today, killing one man and wounding two other people, hospital officials said.

There were no details on the cause of the blast in Jebaliya, but relatives said the dead man was a member of the Islamic group Hamas. The wounded were two relatives, including an eight-year-old child.

Hundreds of people gathered outside the house after the explosion, while fire engines raced to the scene and rescue crews searched for people in the rubble. Dozens of women stood by weeping.

The Israeli army said it wasn’t involved in the incident. The army frequently carries out airstrikes against Palestinian militants and typically claims responsibility for such actions.

Dozens of miltants have been killed accidentally while handling explosives.
