Derry lost second place in the table as they were fortunate to get out of Belfield with a point.
UCD had the better of the first half with their best chance coming on 26 minutes.
College skipper Tony McDonnell’s header fell to Conor Sammon, but Derry keeper David Forde was equal to the shot to make a terrific save.
Derry continued to struggle in the second half and their best chance fell to left-back Sean Hargan on 69 minutes but he shot into the sidenetting.
