Thousands attend protests over statutory rape fiasco

02/06/2006 - 14:04:26
Several thousand people are attending protests across the country today to highlight their anger with the legal situation surrounding statutory rape.

The protests have been arranged in response to the release of a 41-year-old man jailed for having sex with a 12-year-old girl.

The man secured his release in light of the Supreme Court's ruling that Ireland's statutory rape law is unconstitutional.

Replacement legislation is being rushed through the Dáil today.

More than 1,000 people are protesting outside, with those involved carrying white flowers to show support for the victims of child abuse.

Other protests are also taking place in towns and cities throughout the country.
