Hain does U-turn on suspension of Assembly debates
02/06/2006 - 08:19:43Northern Secretary Peter Hain has done a U-turn on his decision to suspend the work of the Stormont Assembly amid threats from the DUP.
Mr Hain had cancelled all debates next week, apparently because Sinn Féin was refusing to take part.
Sinn Féin boycotted a number of debates last month, saying the Assembly had no powers to make decisions and it had no interest in taking part in a "talking shop".
The Northern Secretary has now confirmed that Assembly business will take place next Tuesday.
The move follows a DUP threat to boycott the new committee being established to discuss the obstacles to restoring power-sharing government.
The unionist party threatened not to take part in the committee unless the suspension of the Assembly debates was overturned.
