EC to punish Ireland for unauthorised quarrying
02/06/2006 - 18:29:57The European Commission is bringing Ireland before the European Court of Justice over its failure to control unauthorised quarrying activity.
Some of these illegal quarries are thought to be supplying EU funded road projects.
The Commission says local authorities and the National Roads Authority are purchasing materials from quarries that have not secured planning permission.
Environmental groups are now calling for a separate national planning enforcement authority.
