Adams slams McGuinness spy claims

Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams has slammed media claims that Martin McGuinness was a British spy during the 1990s.

Speaking in Belfast today, Mr Adams said the claim was "absolute rubbish" and he feared it may be motivated by a sinister agenda.

He pointed out that similar claims have been made against other republicans at times of political crisis and even suggested that those behind the accusation may be trying to set Mr McGuinness up for assassination.

"Every time there's an effort to move the process forward, there's always been an intervention," he said.

"I think the subtext of all of this is that there's a possibility that elements want to see Martin McGuinness dead."
