US soldiers find large weapons cache in Iraq

US soldiers found a large weapons cache including rockets, land mines, mortar systems hidden under bags of wheat on a truck north-west of Baghdad, the military said today.

The truck was stopped on May 9 after soldiers discovered seven fuses, 15 mortar tips and wire commonly used in roadside bombs, but the weapons cache was only discovered on Tuesday while the unit was looking for additional evidence, according to the statement.

The cache consisted of 28 rockets, 82 land mines, 43 rocket-propelled grenade rounds, one rocket launcher, two 60 mm mortar systems, one 81 mm mortar system, 30 mortar rounds, 33 rocket-propellant sticks, and other bomb-making materials, the military said. The driver of the truck was detained.

US soldiers also discovered four Russian-made bombs and three hand grenades while searching buildings yesterday in western Baghdad, the military said.
