Police foil alleged plot against Turkish premier

Police in Turkey have foiled an alleged plot to attack premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan and have detained nine suspects, including military officers, newspapers reported today.

Authorities in Ankara were not available for comment, but the semi-official Anatolia news agency said the suspects were “allegedly planning an attack against a politician”.

Police reportedly seized explosives and drawings showing the neighbourhood of Erdogan’s home in Ankara as well as branches of the BIM supermarket chain which is owned by politician Cuneyt Zapsu, a top aide to Erdogan, the daily Hurriyet, Milliyet and Sabah all reported.

The suspects, including three military officers, were under interrogation, said CNN-Turk television.
