Greek police clash with protesting students

01/06/2006 - 17:51:27
Police fired tear gas at protesters when rioting broke out after a rally in Athens against proposed education reforms by Greece’s conservative government.

A group of youths broke away from some 1,500 student demonstrators at a rally in central Athens and smashed bank windows, storefronts and several cars, authorities said.

Police fired tear gas and clashed with the youths.

No arrests or injuries were reported.

Students have staged sit-ins at more than 150 university faculties across the country to protest government plans to end a state monopoly on university education.

The change would require a revision of the country’s constitution.
