MEPs approve stronger laws to combat child sex abuse

The European Parliament has voted to introduce stronger laws to combat the sexual exploitation of children.

Welcoming the move today, Fine Gael MEP Gay Mitchell said the new legislation included a number of measures designed to boost the protection of children.

He said individual member states would be required to share information on sex offenders and this should ensure that offenders convicted in one member state "cannot simply move to another member state to re-offend".

Mr Mitchell is calling on the Government to make sure the new law is fully implemented.
