Harney plays down concerns about released paedophiles

The Tánaiste, Mary Harney, has told the Dáil that there is no question of paedophiles being allowed to work with children following last week's Supreme Court ruling on statutory rape.

Labour Party TD Joan Burton claimed yesterday that the man who was released from prison this week because of the ruling could seek a job driving a school bus and nobody could do anything about it.

However, Ms Harney said today that the garda vetting unit monitors all known and suspected paedophiles and "there's no question of anybody that may be released under these circumstances being able to work with children".
