EC report points to Irish drink problem
01/06/2006 - 08:04:53A new report published by the European Commission today provides further evidence of the extent of Ireland's drink problem.
The report says Ireland has the fifth-highest consumption of alcohol per person in all 25 EU states, behind Latvia, Lithuania, the Czech Republic and Hungary.
Elsewhere, the Irish are identified as the biggest binge drinkers and the highest spenders on alcohol in the EU15.
The EC report also says the number of people who admit that alcohol has affected their work, studies, home life or marriage is higher in Ireland than in any other member state.
The campaign group Alcohol Action Ireland is responding by demanding tougher Government action to tackle the situation.
