Donegal consultants refuse to treat new breast patients
01/06/2006 - 11:26:13Consultants in Letterkenny are refusing to treat breast cancer patients in protest at the Health Service Executive's refusal to appoint a permanent breast surgeon at the hospital in the Co Donegal town.
The doctors say they will continue to treat women referred before today, but will not deal with new patients as part of their action.
The HSE has criticised the move, which will force breast cancer patients to attend other hospitals.
It says the action is unnecessary given its commitment to announce "new arrangements for the provision of quality-assured breast-care services" by the end of this month.
