Child sex abuse victims 'need more help'
Measures to support victims of child sexual abuse will be demanded today.
Independent TD Sinian McGrath is calling for new powers governing statutory rape and more help for victims.
The party slammed successive governments over the High Court’s ruling this week to free a convicted sex offender who admitted having sex with a 12-year-old girl he plied with alcohol.
The state will appeal against the decision in the Supreme Court at 11am tomorrow.
Justice Minister Michael McDowell revealed last night that the Government would also rush emergency legislation on statutory rape through the Dáil and Seanad at the same time.
“We are demanding that new legislation be brought in to deal with statutory rape” said Mr McGrath, of Dublin North Central. “We also want to put in place mechanisms and support for all victims of child sexual abuse.”
Criticising the state’s successive governments he added “The bottom line is the people who have been in power for the last 16 years have had the best legal minds at their disposal and yet the major political parties have failed the citizens dismally.”
The party is also supporting a protest demonstration to be held tomorrow at the Dáil.
