Champions Tyrone embarrassed by Derry

Derry 1-8 Tyrone 0-5

Derry dumped All-Ireland champions Tyrone out of the Ulster Championship at Healy Park to set up a semi-final meeting with either Donegal or Down.

Enda Muldoon's second half goal was the score that left the Red Hands with a mountain they just couldn't conquer.

Tyrone scored just five points in almost 80 minutes of action, failed to raise a flag at all in a bizarre first half, and saw their already depleted resources further stretched on a black afternoon for Mickey Harte's side.

A straight red card will rule Kevin Hughes out of their bid for redemption through the Qualifiers in a few weeks time, while it's not clear who seriously injured Sean Cavanagh is, after the Allstar midfielder was stretchered off 10 minutes from the end.

Johnny McBride's searching delivery picked out Eoin Bradley, and he obliged with a neat acute angle effort to make it 0-4 to no score with 12 minutes played.

The All-Ireland champions were sorely missing the playmaking genius of broken leg victim Brian McGuigan, and battled in vain to get any fluency into their play.

Philip Jordan and Cormac McGinley averted a couple of situations, but there were unforced errors which put them immediately on to the back foot again.

It got worse for the All-Ireland champions, and Kevin Hughes' first championship appearance since 2004 lasted just 17 minutes.

Referee David Coldrick flashed a straight red card at the Killeeshil man after he struck out at Muldoon.

Paddy Crozier's men were running high on confidence at this stage, and they were rewarded with further scores from Muldoon and O'Kane to take a 0-6 to 0-0 lead into the half-time interval.

Points from substitute Joe McMahon and defender Davy Harte was all Tyrone could manage in the third quarter as they forced Derry onto the back foot for long spells, but McCloy, Kevin McGuckin and Francis MncEldowney held firm in the full back line.

And they struck for the only goal of the game on the breakaway, the hard-working Joe Diver starting the move that finished with Muldoon taking Barry McGoldrick's pass to slip the ball low past Pascal McConnell.

Sean Cavanagh was forced out of the action following a heavy collision with Diver, Tyrone had lost one of their prime driving forces.

Having survived a phase of Tyrone pressure, Derry struck the mortal blow a minute from the end of normal time, Paddy Bradley bringing them to the point of no return with the score that left eight between the sides.
