Serena out of Wimbledon
Serena Williams has confirmed she will miss Wimbledon this year due to a knee injury.
Earlier this month the 24-year-old revealed she would not play again “until the end of the summer”.
And the former champion today officially informed All England Club officials she would not contest the third Grand Slam of the year from June 26 to July 9.
Williams has played just four matches since last year’s US Open, three of them at this year’s Australian Open in Melbourne.
Her prolonged absence and varied interests outside tennis has led to speculation Williams will quit the game.
But three weeks ago she insisted she is determined to make a comeback.
“I want everyone to know that I will be back on the tennis court,” said Williams.
“I’m more excited than ever to resume my playing career as soon as my body is ready.
“These past months have been very frustrating for me personally as I have had to take this time off to fully mend from a chronic knee injury.”
