McDowell to address same sex couples law
Minister for Justice Michael McDowell will today address a conference in Dublin on developing a legal status for same sex couples.
Senior Irish legal figures will join experts from Canada, Spain, the UK and the Netherlands at the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland to review the future for gay partnerships and cohabiting couples.
The conference, the Legal Status of Cohabitants and Same Sex Couples, will focus on informing and shaping the debate on providing legal status by exploring international practice in the area.
It has been organised by the Working Group on Domestic Partnership, the Equality Authority and Gay and Lesbian Equality Network.
Other speakers at the conference include former Canadian Supreme Court Judge, Claire L’Heureux-Dube and the Rt Hon Baroness Hale of Richmond DBE, the first woman Lord of Appeal in Ordinary in the UK specialising in family and welfare law and equality issues.
