Sligo unchanged for Galway clash

25/05/2006 - 07:39:32
Sligo manager Tommy Breheny has, as expected, named an unchanged side for Saturday's re-arranged Connacht SFC quarter-final with Galway at Pearse Stadium (throw-in 5.30pm).

The clash was postponed last Sunday as heavy rain and strong winds left the Salthill venue's pitch unplayable.

That meant the eagerly-awaited championship debuts of Sligo corner forwards David Kelly and Kenneth Sweeney were put on hold. But the young duo have retained their places in the original side.

The 19-year-old Kelly is an exciting prospect and has already had a year to remember - he captained St. Attracta's Community School to the All-Ireland Colleges Senior 'B' Championship title. The Tubbercurry attacker played twice for Sligo against Wicklow and Westmeath in the recent National League.

Sweeney, an under-21 panellist last year, will hope to hold his own at left corner forward.

Whilst admitting that he has "a very flexible panel" at his disposal, Breheny felt no need to change his line-up for the sides' 32nd championship meeting.

"We picked a team to try to counter Galway's strengths and to try and play to our own strengths," said the former St. Mary's boss.

Tourlestrane talisman Eamonn O'Hara, who had his knee reconstructed last August, has been included at right half-forward and will hope for an injury-free summer.

Sligo are captained by Easkey defender Noel McGuire, who took over the leadership role from O'Hara this season.

SLIGO (SFC v Galway): P Greene; R Donovan, N McGuire (capt), C Harrison; J Davey, P McGovern, P Doohan; S Daly, B Egan; E O’Hara, B Cullen, A Marren; D Kelly, M Breheny, K Sweeney.
