Talks on new national pay deal suspended until weekend

Negotiations on a new national pay deal have been suspended until the weekend following a failure to make any progress during talks at government buildings last night.

The talks were initially expected to conclude last weekend, but were parked last night due to the continuing gap between the stance of employers and trade unions.

The unions are believed to be seeking pay rises of between 4% and 5% per annum, but employers apparently want any increases kept below 3%.

IBEC is also believed to be resisting union demands for a clause that would allow workers to seek extra pay rises from highly profitable firms.

Yesterday, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern told the Dáil he was pessimistic about the prospects for agreement.
