Cox seeking new target

23/05/2006 - 13:53:31
New Seeker is set to take a drop in class after failing in Group One company on unsuitably soft ground at Newbury.

The six-year-old, trained by Clive Cox, will run in either a Listed or Group Three race next after finishing eighth of nine behind Peeress in the Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes on his first attempt at the highest level.

He could go for either the Listed John of Gaunt Stakes at Haydock on June 8 or the Group Three Ballycorus Stakes at Leopardstown on June 14, both over seven furlongs.

“He’s absolutely fine and the plan is probably to run him in the second or third week of June either at Haydock or in Ireland,” said Matthew Budden, racing manager for owners the Elite Racing Club.

“We’ll look for a Listed or a Group Three and try to kick-start him again.

“It was never really the plan to have that sort of ground for him on Saturday. When we declared him there on the Thursday it was good ground then obviously we had all that rain.

“Clive didn’t think it was bad enough to warrant taking him out. It was perfectly safe ground, it wasn’t bog like.

“If he hadn’t run Clive would have taken him home and given him a good piece of work anyway. He didn’t lose much weight so it didn’t do him any harm.”
