Threshold calls for tougher fire safety rules
23/05/2006 - 08:09:26Housing organisation Threshold is seeking tougher regulations governing fire safety in rented accommodation.
The call follows last night's Prime Time documentary about fire safety standards in Irish houses and how they are regulated.
Threshold says landlords at present are not required to provide smoke detectors, emergency exits or modern heaters and cookers.
It also says the regulations that do exist are poorly enforced.
The organisation says it is particularly concerned about overcrowded properties and older, multiple-unit properties, where the risk of fire is greater.
