Taxpayers 'facing huge bills over Govt’s Kyoto failure'

23/05/2006 - 12:30:57
The Labour Party has warned that taxpayers are facing massive bills due to the Government's failure to comply with the Kyoto Protocol.

The warning follows new figures from the Central Statistics Office showing that Ireland's greenhouse gas emissions increased by 7% between 1997 and 2004, mainly due to a 62% rise in transport pollution.

Labour TD Eamon Gilmore is accusing the Government of deliberately allowing these increases with the intention of buying its way out of its Kyoto commitments.

"The Government's strategy seems to be to pollute today and to pay later," he said. "That will cost the Irish taxpayers a lot of money after 2012, which is the last year for the reduction of greenhouse gases."
