Amnesty report raises series of concerns about Ireland

23/05/2006 - 12:26:50
Amnesty Ireland has criticised Ireland over a range of issues in its annual report for 2005.

The international human rights organisation says it is concerned about Ireland's treatment of people with mental disabilities, abuse of power by the Gardaí and poor prison standards.

It also criticises the effectiveness of attempts to tackle discrimination and violence against women.

The report also says the Government has not satisfactorily investigated allegations that Shannon Airport is being used as part of the CIA's controversial "extraordinary rendition scheme".

Speaking at the launch of the document, the head of Amnesty Ireland Colm O Cuanachain said it was not good enough for the Irish Government to accept assurances from the US that the airport is not being used by these so-called "torture flights".

He said the Government must put in place a monitoring and investigation system to ensure Ireland upholds its stance against torture.
