ISEQ down 218 points

About €3bn was wiped off the value of Irish shares today as the ISEQ index plummeted 218.22 points to close at 7361.37.

In the construction sector, CRH saw 70c fall off its share price, which dived to €25.55. Grafton lost 45c to €9.65 while Kingspan was down 49c to €12.42.

Things were no better for financial stocks. Bank of Ireland fared best, down 32c to €13.83. AIB lost 53c to €17.52 while Anglo Irish bank was down 45c to €12.10. Irish Life and Permanent was down 44c to €18.40.

Elan were the only stocks in the black today, up 64c to €13.95.

Today's losses were set against an international background of concerns about inflation and interest rates which have brought turbulence to markets around the world.
