Strachan refuses to rest on laurels

17/05/2006 - 14:58:36
Gordon Strachan insists Celtic will not be “sitting back” and getting too big for their boots.

The Parkhead manager is under the impression the likes of Rangers, Hearts and Hibernian can sense complacency creeping into the league and CIS Cup double winners.

But Strachan has hit back with a warning to other top-flight clubs and also his own players.

He insists their success is now condemned to the history books and has vowed to make his side even better next term.

Strachan told the Celtic View: “All it does now is put us down in history as a team that won a double and I am fortunate enough to be a Celtic manager who has won a championship – but that’s all it is.

“It’s finished now and as we talk we are now trying to do things that will make us better for next year.

“Because we know for a fact if we don’t get better then the league is going to be closer next year – we have to get better.

“Everybody else is telling us what they are going to do as if we are sitting back as if we think we are great.

“We think we are half decent, that’s as far as we think we are, so we have to try and improve to be very good.”

Celtic have already signed Derek Riordan, Kenny Miller and Gary Caldwell on free transfers while Sparta Prague claim Celtic are favourites to land Czech Republic Under-21s star Michal Kadlec.

Gordon Strachan is believed to have targeted the 21-year-old full-back and despite competition from German outfit Hannover 96, the Scottish champions appear to be in pole position.

Sparta spokesman Lukas Pribyl said: “We have heard of interest from Hannover in Michal but it looks like Celtic are in a stronger position right now.

“We know they are interested and we will probably have a meeting next week to talk to Celtic, Michal and his agent.

“At the moment we have only discussed a potential transfer with his agent.

“He has, we believe, been speaking to Celtic also.”
