Portsmouth move to tie up Taylor

17/05/2006 - 14:10:07
Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric intends to offer Matt Taylor a new contract and has dismissed speculation linking the full-back to Fulham.

Taylor, 24, was the club’s top scorer with seven goals in the season just ended and has a year left on his existing contract.

Tottenham and Newcastle made enquiries at the start of last season and Fulham have revived their interest in him.

But Mandaric said: “There is absolutely nothing in rumours Matthew will be going to Fulham.

“That is pure speculation put about by people who know nothing.

“He is staying here. We don’t want to lose our best players and he is one of them.”

Mandaric added: “We are going to sit down and talk to Matthew about another deal because we want him to stay at Portsmouth.”

The co-owner will also meet Harry Redknapp in the coming days to discuss transfer targets after the Portsmouth manager travelled to France and Portugal in his search for potential signings.

Portsmouth have arranged trips to Torquay (July 19), Yeovil (July 21), Southend (July 26) and former Pompey manager Jim Smith’s Oxford (August 4) as the core of their preparation for the new season.
