Italy's new president sworn in
Former Communist Giorgio Napolitano was sworn in as Italy’s new president today, finally opening the way for centre-left leader Romano Prodi to form a government.
Napolitano, who was elected by politicians last week, was sworn in during a joint session of parliament held at the chamber of deputies, Italy’s lower house.
By Wednesday, he is expected to give the mandate to Prodi.
In his address to the nation immediately after the swearing-in, Napolitano called for respect between the two political sides, at the end of an election campaign dominated by mudslinging and bitter tensions.
His speech was often interrupted by applause.
Prodi has been working on the makeup of his government, but his fractious coalition has been squabbling over key ministries, including defence and interior. He has sought to play down the bickering, saying he would be ready in time.
