Webb clinches victory

15/05/2006 - 08:35:26
Australia’s Karrie Webb led from start to finish to clinch the Michelob ULTRA Open at the Kingsmill Resort in Virginia.

With a final-round 70 for a 14-under-par 270, the former world number one won by seven shots from Lorena Ochoa of Mexico and South Korea’s Hee-Won Han.

Han had a 70 while Ochoa bogeyed the last for a 72, which meant she fell to second place behind Webb on the LPGA money list. The Australian has now won €724,300 to Ochoa’s €711,000.

Webb started the final round with a five-shot lead, and the gap was intact when she had to stop after nine holes for a thunderstorm that suspended play for more than an hour. On the return, Ochoa double-bogeyed the 10th to put Webb in command.

“It’s great to have won again,” said Webb, who has sparked her great comeback to form with a seventh career major at the Kraft Nabisco Championship in California in March. Since then, she has had two seconds and a 10th.

“I can’t say the comeback is complete, but I’m certainly enjoying this stretch of form. It’s amazing what confidence does for your game. I’m seeing a few putts going into the hole and just have great trust in everything I’m doing.”

Last year, 31-year-old Webb slumped to number 27 – her lowest ranking in 10 years on the tour – and she had gone almost two years without a win until her Kraft victory. This was her 32nd career title.
