Trains protest hits services hard
Rail services between Cork and Dublin have been thrown into chaos this morning due to unofficial strike action by train drivers.
The stoppage follows a failed attempt between unions and management to avert the action during talks yesterday.
The drivers had warned that they would not operate new inter-city trains on the Cork/Dublin and Cork/Tralee routes as part of a dispute over pay.
Their action this morning has led to the cancellation of all services out of Kent Station in Cork and is also affecting the Cork/Cobh commuter route.
Drivers in Dublin have also downed tools in solidarity with their Cork colleagues, leading to the cancellation of services out of Heuston Station.
Iarnód Éireann is refusing to re-enter talks with the drivers until they end their stoppage and return to work.
It says the Labour Court has already ruled that there is no basis for their claims for a pay increase in return for operating the new trains.
Iarnód Éireann is updating its website through the day with news on affected services.
