Stolen car sped wrong way along motorways
Police today arrested five people after a stolen car sped down the wrong way along two motorways.
Motorists had to swerve to avoid the vehicle which later crashed into three police vehicles, causing injuries.
At 4.14am, police received a report of a maroon-coloured Ford Escort travelling on the wrong side of the road at high speed on the M1 motorway in the direction of Lisburn.
The vehicle was spotted again at 5am travelling on the West Link motorway on the wrong side of the road.
The car then hit three police vehicles on Upper Regent Street in north Belfast.
A police spokesman added: “Five men were detained in the stolen car. Five police officers and one person in the offending vehicle were hurt in the collisions but none had life-threatening injuries.”
Police believe other vehicles may have had to swerve to avoid the Ford Escort and have appealed for witnesses to contact them.
