Challenge match to raise funds for Waterford's Whelan

12/05/2006 - 12:12:01
Recently crowned National League champions Kilkenny and Justin McCarthy's Waterford side will play a challenge match in Portlaw (throw-in 7.00pm) on Sunday night - as part of a fundraising initiative for former Deise hurler Mossie Whelan.

Together with his brothers Peter, Frankie and Jackie, Whelan was instrumental in helping Portlaw capture four senior county titles in the 1970s. Having gained inter-county recognition, he also played for Munster in the Railway Cup.

Currently, he suffers from the debilitating illness of Motor Neuron Disease and Sunday's fixture has been rightly set up for his benefit.

With Ken McGrath (hand), Eoin Kelly (suspension) and John Mullane (arm) out injured for Waterford, McCarthy will use the match to look at all his options ahead of the Munster SHC semi-final against Limerick or Tipperary on June 4.

Kilkenny boss Brian Cody is also likely to experiment - Carrickshock defender John Dalton could be absentee.

He became ill during a club match last Sunday and was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital for observation.

He was discharged that evening, but may not come under consideration for the clash with the Decies.
