Govt urged to officially recognise unmarried couples
12/05/2006 - 07:38:13A study commissioned by the Human Rights Commission has reportedly found that the Government may be in breach of international conventions by failing to make provisions for unmarried couples.
Reports this morning said the study had concluded that Ireland may be in breach of the European Convention on Human Rights by treating married couples differently to unmarried couples.
It also reportedly finds that Ireland may be in breach of the Good Friday Agreement by failing to allow civil partnerships for same-sex couples.
Reports this morning said the research, which is due to be published by Justice Minister Michael McDowell today, recommended that the constitution be changed to officially recognise all couples, regardless of their marital status or sexual orientation.
