Mallow sugar factory to close today
12/05/2006 - 10:24:19Ireland’s last remaining sugar factory is due to close today after 77 years of operation in Mallow, Co Cork.
The plant is being shut down by Greencore as a result of EU reforms that have also forced the closure of the Carlow sugar factory.
330 workers were employed at the facility and a deal has yet to be reached on how they will be compensated.
Several groups have called for the plant to be converted into a bio-fuel production facility rather than being simply demolished.
