GRA likely to mount legal challenge to reserve

Rank-and-file gardaí look set to mount a legal challenge to the Government's plans to introduce a part-time Garda reserve.

The challenge, which is likely to be mounted on health and safety grounds, is one of several options that the Garda Representative Association (GRA) is considering as part of a campaign against the reserve.

Yesterday, delegates at the association's annual conference in Galway voted overwhelmingly to adopt a formal stance of non-cooperation with the part-time body.

The GRA is also expected to seek an independent review of the proposed reserve, which they believe will be poorly trained and will actually hamper the work of full-time gardaí.
