10/05/2006 - 07:57:01
A bomb exploded at a tea shop this morning near a busy market in violence-plagued southern Thailand, killing three people and injuring nine, police said.

A mobile phone triggered the home-made bomb, which exploded when a military truck pulled up to the tea shop in the municipal township of Pattani, said police Col. Prasert Chansawang of Pattani province.

Six soldiers were among the injured. The three dead were civilians seated at the café when the bomb exploded about 9am local time (2am Irish time), he said.

More than 1,300 people have been killed in violence in the south since a Muslim separatist movement flared in January 2004.
