Elephants on the loose near Stockholm
10/05/2006 - 14:52:25Motorists approaching Stockholm late last night had to rub their eyes from disbelief when they saw three elephants grazing on a meadow by the highway, Swedish radio reported today.
Escaping from a circus van that was towed by a lorry which had suddenly overturned on a sharp bend just north of the capital, the animals dispersed across the field.
A fourth elephant and the lorry driver were slightly injured but recovered quickly, rescue service spokesman Anders Karlsson told the radio.
“I suppose they could have run away but they were very complacent and stayed on the meadow, close to their keeper,” he said.
