11 climbers missing on Europe's highest mountain
10/05/2006 - 11:19:26Russian rescue teams today continued their search for 11 climbers missing on Europe’s highest peak, Mt. Elbrus.
The 11 were in a group of eight Russians and four Ukrainians who had set out to reach the 18,506ft summit yesterday, the 61st anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany, but who lost contact with their expedition organisers at the base of the mountain.
One member of the group managed to reach rescuers, but they have been unable to pinpoint the location of the remaining members of the climbing party, said Boris Tilov, chief of the Elbrus rescuers’ service.
The search was complicated by harsh weather, he said.
