Walker gets new Wanderers deal

10/05/2006 - 12:45:37
Ian Walker has been rewarded for his patience at Bolton by securing a new two-year deal.

The 34-year-old goalkeeper failed to make a single appearance in the Premiership last season such was the good form of Jussi Jaaskelainen.

But Walker won over manager Sam Allardyce with the way he conducted himself during the campaign.

Allardyce said: “It has been a tough year for Ian as he has found it difficult to oust Jussi from the starting line-up.

“I have been impressed with his attitude and commitment and it is very pleasing he wants to stay here rather trying to ply his trade elsewhere.”

Walker, capped four times by England, joined Bolton last July after a spell at Leicester.

With Oman international Ali Al-Habsi also on the payroll, Allardyce is delighted with his goalkeeping options.

He told www.bwfc.co.uk “We now have three top-class goalkeepers and I do not think there is another Premiership club that can compete with us on this level.”

Fourth-choice goalkeeper Chris Howarth has also signed a new contract, which will see him stay at the Reebok Stadium next season.
