Wallcott call-up hailed as potential masterstroke
Harry Redknapp believes Sven-Goran Eriksson’s decision to include Theo Walcott in his World Cup squad “could be a tactical masterstroke”.
Portsmouth boss Redknapp gave the teenage sensation his first-team debut as a 16-year-old when in charge at Southampton.
Walcott’s subsequent move to Arsenal had seen him slip out of the limelight with a spell in the Gunners’ reserves.
But Redknapp has no doubts he will be ready to make an impact on the world’s biggest stage in Germany this summer.
“I was a little surprised to see him included but the lad is a real talent,” said Redknapp. “He has so much ability and his pace is frightening. He is quicker than anyone else I have seen.
“Yes, Theo is inexperienced but he is a great player to chuck on from the bench.
“He may still be a kid but he won’t be daunted by mixing with the likes of Beckham and Gerrard. He is a confident lad. This could be a tactical masterstroke from Sven,” quotes The Sun.
