Kenny distances himself from FG candidate’s controversial remarks

09/05/2006 - 15:37:30
The Fine Gael leader is playing down controversial remarks by an election candidate for the party.

Enda Kenny said this afternoon that Dr Bill Tormey was expressing personal views when he said that returning Irish missionaries should be screened for disease and that heroin should be legalised.

“Fine Gael policy is enunciated and determined by the Fine Gael front bench and the Fine Gael parliamentary party,” Mr Kenny said.

“Dr Tormey was invited on the Late Late Show in his professional capacity because of his work and he, no more than any other person in this country, is entitled to his views.”

The GP is standing for the Dáil in Dublin North West.
