Nintendo console to compete with PlayStation

09/05/2006 - 19:36:39
Nintendo today demonstrated its next-generation console which will compete against rival offerings from PlayStation and Sony.

Called Wii (pronounced Wee), it was developed under the code name Revolution.

The console will go on sale at some point during the last three months of this year, Nintendo said.

Wii includes a motion sensitive remote control which players use to “manipulate” the games.

The Wii Remote contains delicate sensors which help it act as a tennis racket, weapon, baseball bat, golf club or an aeroplane depending on which game is being played.

It creates vibrations and noises to make the experience of playing each game even more realistic.

The console comes with a second motion-sensitive control called the Nunchuk which plugs into the Wii Remote for double-handed games such as boxing.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said: “Not only is Wii compelling to current game players, but it also will entice new players with new experiences.

“To expand the total number of game players we must make our experience both friendlier and more compelling. With Wii it is.”

Nintendo is making its entire back catalogue of games from all previous Nintendo systems available to download on Wii.

The price of the new console has not yet been released but is described as “affordable” by the technology giant.

PlayStation earlier announced the worldwide launch dates and prices of its new PS3 console.
